What do we want? Ubiquity! When do we want it? Now!

Projectplace started in 1998 which makes us one of the first Softwares as a Service. In the late 90’s, when dial-up was still the prevailing method of connecting to the Internet, it was a cutting edge feature to be able to access your project from any computer (with an Internet connection). More than a decade later, that is no longer the case.

Wifi, 3g, 4g, laptops, and above all smartphones mean that these days we are connected to the Internet practically all the time and the way we work has changed with it. We expect to be able to answer our email and keep up to date whether we are at home, in the office or on the move. This means that it did not come as a complete surprise to us that one of the most requested developments on Projectplace Ideas – our forum for customer feedback – is to make Projectplace work on smartphones. We want to be able to use whatever platform, whenever, to work. Ubiquity!

We listen to our users feedback and in 2009 we launched our first mobile app, for iPhone. The reason we chose iPhone for the first app was simply that it was the fastest growing platform, had plenty of support on Projectplace Ideas and was exciting and inspiring for our developers. We learned a lot from this first leap into the app market and with increasing demands to expand onto other platforms we started up a development team designated to work on mobile platforms in the summer of 2011. Their first task two tasks was to develop something new for iOS that would also work fine on iPad and to sink their teeth into Android which was the next hottest platform demanded on Projectplace Ideas. The iOS and Android teams had the same task: to create a great app for Documents! The race was on and it was the Android team that was first to have the app on the marketplace in December 2011. You can read Jens and Johan’s own story in their post From Zero to Hero . The iOS team was hot on the trail though and Apple appstore reviewed and released the Documents for Projectplace app in January 2012.
